Overview This is a set of classroom lessons (a semester module) reflecting a global perspective on meeting challenges and making small changes to eating well. The lessons below can be used during the semester to meet a few grade level standards in areas of reading, math, science and social studies with a focus on improving health. Students will have a semester to work on their module and present it at the end of the semester. During the course of the semester, students will make direct contact with someone in another country and interact via an educational social network. ![]() |
![]() Student Activities for First Half of the Semester Practice A- Food for thought. Read the Map and pick a country from your continent. Be sure to start a word document with your name and food item from the country you want to know more about and save it as Practice A. The food item you identify is a local or farm raised healthy food item from the country. Save your work and be sure your practice a doc is saved to your group folder. Practice B-Database of possible recipes- Open a word document and add a table. Go to insert at the top, then select table. It should be 3 rows and 3 columns like the example as follows. Be sure to save it and label it practice B.
Practice C- Global Partners Worksheet- Open a microsoft word document and tell your global partern all about you. Include your name, favorite subject in school, hobbies and favorite snack or food. Ask them the same. Create a paragraph about you and ask them in a list form. Save it to your group folder and the teacher will email them. Example- Hi, My name is Ellena and I am in grade 3. Math and Reading are my favorite subjects. Hobbies include exercise and computers. After I swim or run I like to eat fresh fruit or home made chocolate cup cakes. What about you? Please tell me about yourself, here are a few questions. What is your name? What is your favorite subject? Do you have any hobbies or a favorite snack? Next, as a group in one document,start a group email on a microsoft word document. Tell them about your project and what you will be sending. That will be also be emailed by the teacher, save it to the group folder. Student Activities for the Second Half of the semester A- You will work as a group and create a blog entry,first each student will draft one in microsoft word. You can cut and paste the entry after it is revised and you get comments from the teacher. Tell how to make the group recipe. Include a few words on why it is healthy. Save it to your group folder and be sure you name it Practice A. B- You will use a webcam or smartboard software to create a presentation on how to make your healthy global recipe including nutritional value. Let you teacher know so she can give you assigned times to work on this. Write a plan of what each group member will do and save it to your group folder. Example- Film, write the recipes, present the info to the camer. C- You will write a group email sending the class blog link and ask their global partners to respond by picking their favoirte recipe or comment and question about a food topic such as world hunter or high food prices.
